The Google for Entrepreneurs Black Founders Exchange Program returns to Durham for its third year. Hosted by American Underground, The Exchange is a week-long immersion program for pre-selected teams, focused on addressing the documented funding gap for startups led by Black founders.

“I think we’ve been seeing evidence that the Triangle tech scene is kind of sub-par to none,” says Phillipe Charles, director of communications and member experience at the Triangle’s biggest tech hub, Durham’s American Underground.

Duke TIP — Talking Entrepreneurship at American Underground
For June’s issues of Navigator and Insights magazines, Duke TIP paid a visit to American Underground, a co-working space for growth companies in Durham, North Carolina. Phillipe Charles, a TIP alum and AU’s Director of Communications, showed us around the space and talked innovation, dedication, and being okay with “failing fast.”

According to the 2015-16 AU annual report, $26.7 million were raised by AU-headquartered companies, with 1,000+ jobs created. Of those companies, nearly 30 percent were minority-led. Charles’ main mission is to connect these emerging entrepreneurs within the hub to existing investors and resources that can help them scale their businesses.

Durham, NC: A Destination for Black Entrepreneurship

WRAL-TV and FOX 50 have both received multiple nods from the Nashville/Midsouth Chapter of The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS). The stations received a total of 34 nominations in 30 categories ranging from News and Promotions to Technical Achievement.
Lip Dub 2015: The Year of the Swag
It’s the 5th year of the FOX 50 Lip Dub Project, and we really wanted to make some NOISE (which isn’t easy to do when you’re lip syncing.) Every year we turn our promo itself into a lip dub video and recruit CBC employees to get their dance on and bust some sweet lip syncing that would make Milli Vanilli jealous.

Capitol Broadcasting had a big night at the regional Emmys in Nashville. WRAL-TV won 10 category awards, sister station FOX 50 won two awards, and WRAL-TV Anchor David Crabtree was inducted into the Silver Circle.
Capitol Broadcasting Company Receives Governor’s Award
It was a Capitol Broadcasting Company night in Nashville, Tennessee when the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Nashville/MidSouth Chapter awarded CBC and the A.J. Fletcher Foundation the Governor’s Award in 2012. CBC television stations WRAL and Fox 50 also took a total of 15 awards.

Phillipe Charles ’06, a creative services producer at FOX 50, an affiliate of WRAL-TV in Durham, N.C. received two Emmy awards at the 25th annual MidSouth Regional Emmy Awards on Saturday, Jan. 29.
